They say that the kitchen is the heart of the home. And it can be easy to see why. It is a room in the home that gets plenty of daily use. Even if you’re not a fan of cooking. But as it is a space in the home that can get a lot of wear and tear, it can feel like a room that can end up looking a little drab.
So you may be planning to renovate your kitchen. Or at least bring some of the decor or appliances up to date. If this sounds like you, and you want to make some changes, then here are some things that you should know or be thinking about, before you go ahead and renovate.
Stick To Budget
Kitchens are a room in the home that can add value, potential buyers rarely want to move in and think about changing the kitchen. It can be a big expense and a big hassle. So they can help to seal the deal if you are thinking of selling too.
But having said that, there is no need to go all out on the expense, even if you can afford to. The rule of thumb with kitchens is that you shouldn’t go over 15% of your home’s overall value. So if the home you live in is worth $200,000, then a renovation on the kitchen should cost no more than $30,000 (and that is a lot of money, so you should be easily able to stick to that). You don’t want to spend more, as when it comes to selling, you may not make that money back.

Choose Quality Design
There is a saying that there is no such thing as a free lunch. And when it comes to renovating your kitchen, you can relate that to say that there is no such thing as a free kitchen design. You can go to hardware stores that offer kitchen designs for free, but in reality, they can limit your choices as they are often being paid to plug certain brands or items.
So choosing an independent designer, and choosing to see before and afters here and on other sites online, you can get a good idea about the skills and expertise that they have. It can often pay to pay for your kitchen design, if that makes sense?

Expand or Change Layout
When you think about a renovation, you won’t be alone in thinking that you want to get it all planned out and make some grand changes while you are at it. But there are ways to make the space look larger without knocking down walls or expanding your budget.
If you have a kitchen that is a little on the small side, then how about stealing some of the space from the surrounding area? Even a bit of space from a porch or hallway could make a difference. You could also create the illusion of space by rethinking the layout. If you have an island or breakfast bar in the middle of the room, is there really room for it? If not, removing it could give the illusion of much more space, without doing anything else.
I need to send this to my sister who is renovating her kitchen right now. Her budget is crazy but hopefully she sticks with it.
Can’t wait to have a home for my husband and I! Renovating sounds like a lot of work, but great payoff xx
Great advice to those that are thinking about home renovations, it’s too common that people just jump into things without thinking them through! https://mariannyc.com/2018/07/16/nyc-garment-district/
Sticking to a budget is so important when renovating otherwise things can spiral out of control quickly.
