3 RULES FOR RAISING HEALTHY KIDS

Don’t Say The Wrong Thing

This is the first thing to remember because children are very impressionable and if you say the wrong thing to them, you might end up doing more harm than good.

For example, you might think it’s a good idea to have a discussion with your child about their weight but that’s not the way to go. If you’re constantly, talking about it, they’ll develop a complex about their weight which can lead to some more serious issues in later life, like eating disorders etc.

Check out https://adventuresfrugalmom.com/the-dos-and-donts-of-raising-healthy-children/ for a handy list of some of the mistakes you should avoid when you’re trying to keep your kids healthy. Instead of constantly focusing on weight, you should just be teaching them which foods are good for them and stressing the importance of regular exercise.

2. Keep Them Active

Regular exercise is the most important thing if you want kids to be healthy. In the past, it wasn’t really a problem because kids were always out playing. but these days, that doesn’t happen as much. They increasingly want to stay indoors on the computers and phones and they’ll come up with plenty of excuses to avoid exercise. It’s important that you’re firm with them and don’t give in when they fight you on this.

Set certain times of day where they aren’t allowed to use screens and encourage them to get outside. This works a lot better if you can get the other local parents on board and coordinate those efforts. If your child and all of their friends are banned from screens at the same time, they’re far more likely to get outside and play. You should also make sure that you’re setting a good example by exercising yourself. Try to get the whole family involved with activities like bike rides etc. The earlier you start, the easier it will be to get them to exercise.

3. Teach Them To Cook

You want your children to be healthy for life so you need to prepare them for adulthood by teaching them certain skills, mainly cooking. Visit https://www.eatright.org/homefoodsafety/four-steps/cook/teaching-kids-to-cook for some great tips on safety with kids in the kitchen.

By teaching them to cook, you show them how to prepare their own healthy food and you also teach them more about nutrition and which ingredients are healthy. If they play a part in cooking it, they’ll be more likely to try healthy foods and they’ll have a better understanding of how to eat right.

Keeping kids healthy is always a struggle but it’s more important than ever in the midst of a childhood obesity crisis.
