It’s often said that your smartphone is bad for you, that they cause damage to your physical and mental health and have had a negative impact on society.
While there maybe some truth in this, there is also a lot of good that you can use your phone for and aside from the connectivity to people there are endless benefits.
This also includes benefits to your health, so take a look at this list to make sure you’re getting the most out of yours and being as healthy as you can.
Counting Steps
If you want to get your steps up and try to reach the goal of 10,000 a day then you don’t need a pedometer or even a Fitbit, your phone can do this pretty accurately just by carrying it around with you. iPhones have a health app built in as standard, so you don’t even need to download it.
You also don’t need to run it; the app will count your steps whether you want it to or not and whether you know about it. It can tell you how many flights of stairs you’ve gone up too or how many meters you’ve climbed and the distance you have travelled.
Counting Calories
There are several apps now, most notably Myfitnesspal and LoseIt which are free to use and fantastic for tracking the food you eat throughout the day. With a scanner feature, you can scan a barcode, and the apps will find them and tell you the nutritional content you need to know.
They will also track your weight, give you goals, and tell you how long it will take to reach your goal based on your habits. You can also build recipes, so if there’s something you make regularly, then you can enter all the ingredients into the app and save the recipe so that each time you have it, it’s easy to log your portion.
Meditation
Such a great way of relieving stress and teaching you to be calmer, there are some fantastic meditation apps available now with a number of purposes depending on what you’re looking for.
Whether it’s five minutes of mindfulness on the bus, a bedtime story read to you or a breathing app to relax you; the choices are endless. Many are free but have premium services if you want them so it’s a good idea to download one and see if you like it, if not then you can try a couple of others to find which one is right for you.
Sleep Monitoring
There are also some great apps which monitor your sleep. They can show you your sleep patterns which are really interesting to know. And also they will wake you up when you’re in your lightest sleep meaning that you wake up fresh and happy rather than flustered and startled. You’ll find interesting statistics and trends and even listen to something to soothe you off to sleep.
