Raising Well Rounded Kids

how to raise well rounded kids

As parents, of course, the aim is always to do your best. But sometimes we can be so consumed with the ways we feel like we are failing, we don’t see how much joy and love we bring to our children.

But it is hard to raise a well-rounded child alone, although shout out to all the single parents who are doing it right now. Confidence, a sense of purpose, belonging, and love. They sound like big things, probably because most adults will readily admit they don’t have them all down yet.

But here are some ways that you can help instil these things in your child.

Skills

The great thing about raising children is that you can never be sure what their unique abilities will be. But when they find it, you can be the one to help them grow it. You might like to help them build their skills by taking them to classes like dance, music, and swimming.

School or home education are also great for fitting in cool things and extracurricular clubs. And, it is always worth remembering that unstructured play lets them test out their own skills and explore without limits.

Praise

You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar. While children all tend to act out at different times, in general, they are testing boundaries and learning about what is deemed right and wrong.

Praising your children for the things they do right is essential. Just like when you are at work or home, and people mention that they appreciate what you’ve done. The same applies to the kids. When they feel good about themselves, and their accomplishments, they are more likely to want to push that forward and learning more. It nurtures their inner drive.

Network

The people around your children will have an impact on them too. From their aunt who is confident and bubbly, the butcher who talks to them, your neighbours who come over for coffee. Even their doctors and nurses from somewhere supportive and nurturing like pediatrics of Plano.

You can curate the people around your children to provide them with support and love. Ones that encourage them, people with outgoing characters, exciting jobs, and caring nature.

Reading

Even babies who can’t read, and have no idea what a book is, can be read to. The plethora of words that they hear and see will have a significant impact on everything else that they do and learn. Many parents read to their children at bedtime, and others only when pressed.

There are complex rhythms and nuances to be heard when someone reads to you. Reading to your children will help them build the skills to listen, answer questions, and will let their imaginations run wild. Just think about your favourite books as a child, and even if it was one that you read alone, there is no denying how those things stick with you.

The final thing is that you can admit when you are wrong too. Parents often feel pressure to be the fountain of knowledge and never do or say anything wrong. But showing children that anyone can make a mistake and take responsibility is a powerful thing.
