“Grass looks greener on the other side.” But is it the truth? Definitely no!
Every person in the world has their own struggles and sorrows. Likewise, every person has their own way of dealing with their struggles. But sometimes, in order to handle things on their own, people tend to suppress their true emotions.
According to the statistics, approximately 284 million people in the world suffer from stress and anxiety. The reason is that people don’t address their emotions and thought patterns. Eventually, these emotions become overwhelming and start affecting daily life.
Unfortunately, there is no specific test that can help diagnose mental illness. Even medical professionals or counsellors try to understand the symptoms of poor mental health and take steps accordingly.
Now the question is- What are these symptoms? Scroll down to learn!
Poor mental well-being symptoms you shouldn’t ignore
Sleep schedule is off
According to the NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness), sleeping and mental health have a direct relation. Both create a vicious circle that can turn the bad condition into worse. In simple terms, poor mental health affects the sleep cycle and also the quality of sleep. And when you don’t complete your rest, it results in irritation and anger, which affects your mental health.
Sometimes, stress, workload, or caffeine can be the reason behind irregular sleep. It can improve with exercise, yoga, and changing diet. But if your sleeping schedule is still not improving, then it is a warning sign that you must take it seriously.
Change in appetite
Do you often feel too hungry, while sometimes it is difficult for you to eat even a single bite? If your answer is Yes, then it could be a matter of concern. Sudden change in eating habits is also one of the signs of poor mental health. It is directly related to conditions like depression and anxiety.
But the change could also be due to menstruation or a shift in surroundings. Therefore, if your eating pattern is not getting back to normal quickly, you should consult the doctor.
Ongoing irritability and impatience
The sudden shift in your behaviour from normal to impatient or angry could be because you are not addressing your emotions properly. There might be some things that are bothering you, such as family issues, relationship trouble, or work performance. But instead of resolving them, you are leaving it for “later.” Which might trigger impatience and irritability.
Furthermore, such scenarios can result in burnout or lead to “Self-harm” thoughts. It is a sign of depression and anxiety disorders, and you must take steps toward healing with the help of counseling. If left untreated, the situation might get worse.
Isolating more than usual
Isolation is crucial for self-care, especially if you are an introvert. You need to recharge your batteries and prepare your mind to interact with people. Moreover, it helps in regulating thoughts and staying calm.
However, if you are isolating yourself to ignore your family and friends, and if it is happening more than usual, maybe you need to rethink isolation. It could be because of an underlying health condition.
Besides that, at times when your mind is becoming a mess, it is better to talk to somebody and speak your mind. Otherwise, it’ll result in overthinking and stress. Staying away from everyone or locking yourself in the room are not healthy solutions.
Distressed at work
It is not easy to create a work-life balance. Sometimes situations demand extra working hours and fewer breaks. It can result in wishing not to go to work. It’s normal! Additionally, disagreements and disputes in the workplace are also normal.
However, if you don’t feel like working or try to skip work hours regularly, it is serious. When the mind is not at peace, it can affect the work quality as well as the mood to work. On top of that, if your workplace environment is not healthy, it might get overwhelming to handle. In such a situation, you should try to take a day off and relax your mind. But if it does not work, seek immediate help.
Unexplained physical symptoms
As mentioned above, there are no specific physical symptoms that can indicate poor mental health. Yet, stress and anxiety can cause symptoms such as headaches and stomach ache. If you can figure out any specific reason behind these, it could be an underlying condition, and you might need to consult your doctor.
Note: If these symptoms are regularly occurring, you shouldn’t take any medication without consulting the doctor. Besides that, if you face any other sign, do pay attention to it.
Trouble concentrating on things
Do you feel uninterested in the things you once used to love? Do you prefer being alone while lying on your bed all day long? Do you find it hard to concentrate on daily functioning things? If yes, then it could be the reason for declining mental health, generally emotional fatigue and occasional burnout.
You should try yoga as it can help in improving concentration and relaxing your mind. But it doesn’t work; try checking in with a therapist.
Change in sex drive
Unless you are asexual, having sexual desires is completely normal. But not all the time. There can be scenarios where you are just too tired and need a good night’s sleep. Or, you feel like the spark is no longer there.
However, if your sex drive is drastically declining or you feel like it has become nonexistent, maybe you need to talk about it. There could be a physiological reason behind it. But, it can impact both physical and mental health.
Alcohol helps numb the emotions and make everything feel good. However, it is just an illusion and not at all good for your health. It interferes with the chemicals present in the brain and makes the bad condition worse. Therefore, if you drink or smoke, you need to stop that instantly.
To sum it all up!
Mental health is not something that should be ignored. If not treated on time, it can affect the functioning of the body as well. Nonetheless, with the symptoms mentioned above, you can pay attention to them. Moreover, if you observe any behavior or dietary change, consult the doctor or counselor immediately.
