Is Your Home Childproof? It Can Be, Thanks To This Post

how to babyproof your home

Whether single or as a couple, life is quite easy. You don’t realize how good you have it until the little ones come along. As soon as a baby is introduced into the household, everything is deadly. Put the cutlery away; it’s too sharp, turn the switches off; electricity is dangerous, bolt the drawers; they might get in them. Yes, as a parent, there is a lot to consider.

Even with the main ones out of the way, there are plenty of hazards still lurking around the corner. Moms and dads hate this thought because no one wants their home to be a deathtrap. Thankfully, those that are can transform and turn into a beacon of light for other properties and families.

The trick is to understand the simple fixes which should instantly stamp out any danger. Below, you’ll find a selection which is well worth checking out if you are interested.

Ways to childproof your home

Secure Windows, Doors And Stairs

When kids begin to toddle and walk around, parents have the same reaction. It’s somewhere between astonishment and unbridled joy. Sorry to burst your bubble, but the feeling changes when you realize they are mobile and can get into all kinds of trouble. Slips, trips, falls and spills are about to become a feature of life, and in some ways, they are character building.

Of course, some skids are too dangerous to let happen in the first place, the stairs being the main example. One tumble down the staircase can lead to an emotional trip to the ER, so make sure there are baby gates. For a long while, they shouldn’t be able to open them without help.

Weirdly enough, doors and windows are flashpoints too. Kids love to climb, and they will try and escape through an entry point, which is why they need locking.

Be Wary Of Water

Lots of homes have pools, water features which are awesome in the warmer months. For kids, though, they are potentially hazardous because they can’t swim or hold up their heads.

Therefore, a slip into a pool can be deadly. Draining the water isn’t an option either as a fall into a tiled basin is as dangerous. The water has to stay, but the child should never go anywhere near the pool without adult supervision. Even then, always keep your eyes on them as they can move in a flash.

Any other water features around the house need rethinking. Something as benign as a bucket of H2O is a drowning worry, so throw it down the drain. H2O is one of the reasons showers have taken over baths in popularity.

Put Photos Out Of Reach

Pictures? What’s wrong with a couple of family photographs? The answer is nothing if you are a fully grown adult. However, for kids, the frames contain glass and that makes them a risk.

All a child has to do is topple one over and the sharp edges can cut their hands, face and body. Although it seems out of the blue, it has happened before, on more than one occasion. Anyway, there is no need to take the risk when the fix is so basic.

All you have to do is put the photographs out of reach so that they can’t get their little hands on the frame. Considering their height and reach disadvantage, it shouldn’t be too difficult.

A savvy move is to hang picture frames on the wall or to stick them to a partition with glue or a pin. Then, they will be completely out of the way or there won’t be any glass.

Change Up Cleaning Products

Often, the advice is to store cleaning products and supplies out of the way of children. After all, anything can happen when a young child gets their hands on a tub of bleach. Because it’s quoted all of the time, there is no point going over old news.

So, to add to it, this post is going to propose switching supplier altogether. Although the effect is lessened, there is still a danger of ingesting chemicals after use. Your toddler may be crawling around the floor, as happy as a clam in a fisherman’s net when they stick their tongue out.

Everything that is on the ground will go into their mouth and then the bloodstream. Organic products don’t have that effect, and you can check out CleanHappens.com for more if you need proof. Organic may be more expensive but it’s worth spending the money for the sake of your kid’s health. Plus, natural cleaners are as effective nowadays as traditional pharmaceuticals.

Cover The Fireplace

As energy bills have risen, homeowners have looked for cheaper ways to warm a property. As a result, fireplaces or log burners have become more popular. And, it isn’t hard to see why. They give off a tremendous amount of heat and wood and coal is half as cheap gas and electric.

It’s a pretty simple decision when you see it without rose-tinted glasses. Of course, as soon as your son or daughter begins to explore, it transforms into a real hazard. One touch when it’s roaring and they may receive very bad burns. Uninstalling it will cost a fortune in a variety of ways, so what are your options?

The first and main one is to cover the fire with a guard. As long as it goes around the entire hearth, they shouldn’t be able to touch it. Still, it’s best to keep an eye on them anytime they are close.

Tidy Up

Kids are like an atom bomb – everything they touch turns to dust. They are human wrecking machines and love their job. So, it’s easy to see the clutter and think “I’ll get it later. It’s only going to get worse.” As efficient as the logic is, it’s potentially dangerous as small toys full of bits and pieces.

All it takes is a small amount of plastic to come loose and end up in your son/daughter’s mouth. They will make more mess, but cleaning up after them is important for safety reasons.

What do you think of the list? Are there any you want to add?

I currently have my two and three year old nieces living in my family home, so my family has had to incorporate a lot of these ideals. We keep all our cleaning products either under the sink or in the bathroom, and always have to keep the bathroom door closed for that very reason. So many things could go wrong if we didn’t!

Have a good weekend dude 🙂

Great post on childproofing! Children are so fast and definitely into everything. Plus, they develop new skills so quickly that it’s a good idea to childproof even before you think they’re capable of certain things.
