We all wish life was like a bed of roses with sunshine and rainbows with joy and laughter always. But unfortunately, that’s not what life is. Life is rather full of ups and downs. Some days you are in your elements and other days, it feels like the whole weight of the earth is crashing down on you.
Everybody goes through it, so if you ever feel like you are alone, don’t. We all experience bad times. So what do you do when bad times come? The first and most important thing to do when bad times come, is to be calm.
Usually, when we face challenges in life, we panic and we start to worry. But the truth is, doing this will only cause you to stress and feel under pressure. And while stress to some extent is good, it can be very detrimental to your health if it is too much and unbearable for you.
Moreover, trying to do things when you are stressed, might cause more mistakes and land you into more troubles, so it is best that you learn to be calm when life gets tough. So, in this post, we will take a look at some ways to calm yourself.
Simple activities that will help you to calm yourself
Just breathe. No matter what negative emotion you feel, just breathe. Whether you feel anxious, scared, angry or sad. Just breathe. Try breathing in and out for like 5-10 seconds and you will start to feel better.
Breathing helps clear the mind and gives you a better perspective on things. You can reconnect with yourself and understand there might be a solution to whatever is troubling you in life by breathing. So just breathe.
Before you decide on what your next step should be, take some time out to relax. What is your favorite way to relax? A pamper day, reading a book, shopping, listening to music, visit to the beach, eating out, watching a movie, going for a walk or a ride? Whatever helps you relax and clear your mind.
Have a hobby
One thing is that, you have a lot of time to worry and stress about life when you have nothing to do. So get a hobby. Something you can do whenever you have some free time, this way you are not always at a corner worrying and stressing about your life.
When you have free time or begin to feel depressed, decide to do something. Choose a hobby if you don’t already have one. It can be anything that makes your day enjoyable, such as reading, painting, singing, or dancing. Use this time wisely, and once you’ve finished, you’ll feel fine. This can also push you to move forward and refresh your mind.
Get a good sleep
Make good sleep your priority. A night of good sleep can get you prepared for the day ahead. Make sure you sleep for about 8-9 hours every day. This will help your mental and physical health as well. A night of good sleep can clear your mind and also make you stay focused as well.
If you are fond of keeping late nights, make sure to start retiring to bed early. You know how the saying goes, “early to bed, early to rise”. So go to bed early and you can get the full 8 to 9 hours of sleep.
Watch some funny jokes and laugh
Whether it’s a comedy show or a funny skit on tiktok or youtube, watch something and allow yourself to have a good laugh.
Edgar Watson Howe once said, “If you don’t learn to laugh at trouble, you won’t have anything to laugh at when you’re old.“ That is to say, nothing is permanent, and problems come and go. You must thus laugh your problems out.
Surround yourself with positive people
When life gets tough, the people around you can either make things better or make things worse. So you need to be mindful of the company you keep. Constantly be in the company of positive people who will support you. No matter how you are feeling, they can always draw you in with their enthusiasm.
Take a walk
Another healthy way of reducing stress is walking. You may quickly clear your head by moving around and getting some fresh air. Something as simple as taking a stroll around your neighborhood can help you to calm down. Our mental health benefits from walking as well. It lowers blood pressure and also restores your sense of normalcy and comfort.
Listen to music
Music is a simple yet effective way to clear your mind. Try to listen to your favorite music. Listening to music can cool down your heart and brain.
One common habit of people is that, they listen to music that reflects their mood. So someone feeling brokenhearted will listen to sad songs about heartbreak. Unfortunately, that will only be a reminder of what you are going through and will make you feel a lot more sad.
So instead of listening to broken heart songs, try listening to songs about loving yourself and making yourself feel better. Dance to the music you can, it is the greatest medicine for stress. Listen continuously to your favorite music and you will be fine.
Accept your situation
Acceptance is a very powerful tool. It is easier to deal with your problems once you accept that you have such a problem. It is okay to feel down sometimes, but accepting your situation doesn’t mean not doing anything to improve it.
You accept the situation and then figure out the best way to improve things and make things better. Don’t say I accept I was fired and so now I’m unemployed and I’m just going to be there feeling sorry for myself. NO! that is the wrong way to look at things.
Say, I accept I was fired and now I’m unemployed. So now what can I do to improve my life? Where can I get another job and how do I make sure that I don’t get fired at my next job? Once you start looking at things like that, you are half way through solving your problems.
You also need to accept whatever emotion you are feeling and see the best way to move past it. Usually people try to deny that they are feeling any form of negative emotion but it shouldn’t be like that.
We are all human and negative and positive emotions are all parts of us. So acknowledge whatever negative emotion you are feeling but don’t make any decision in the moment, just find a way to work through your emotions.
There are people who eat more than they need when they are going through challenges and there are also people who lose their appetite for food when facing challenges. None of these is good for you. You have to make sure that you are eating right no matter what you are going through.
Overeating can lead to been overweight and that is not good for your health, not eating can also cause you to be underweight and that can be bad fr your health as well. So you have to eat right no matter what and drink enough water.
Take a cold bath
Whenever you feel stressed or depressed just take a cold bath. It is one of the fastest stress relievers. Bathing with cold water makes you feel good. You feel some fresh air after bathing in cold water. You will feel fantastic after taking a cold shower.
Play with your pets
You can have exciting moments by playing with your pets at home or at the park. This will calm down your heart and mind as well. Playing with your fury friends mean that you won’t think or worry about your problems and you will feel better than before.
Just as playing with your pets, playing any form of game can help you to calm yourself. Whether you are playing with your friends, family or even playing by yourself, playing a game can help you feel better.
Moreover, been in the midst of your friends and family playing together can make you feel a lot better because you will realize that there are people who care and love you no matter what.
